PROGRAM NOTES

12.14.12 is organized into four distinct layers of activity, each of which has its own structure and distinct musical language. The smallest and most individual of these layers is a solo piccolo, while the largest consists of a seven-player mixed ensemble. throughout the composition, the layers interact with one another in unique and unpredictable ways; this is meant to symbolize, in some small way, the real-world confluence of planning, fate, and chance.

The score is prefaced with a quote from Yeats’ The Stolen Child: “Come away, O human child! / To the waters and the wild / With a faery, hand in hand, / For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.”

Premiered by Martha Cargo (soloist) with students from Manhattan School of Music in Greenfield Hall, New York, NY (April 2014)
