PROGRAM NOTES
Fantasy on a French Carol was composed for a commission from the New Orleans New Music Ensemble (NONME). The occasion was a children’s Christmas concert. I used the opportunity to explore a favorite Christmas melody (Il est né, le divin Enfant, or “He is Born, the Divine Child,” first published in 1862) while at the same time experimenting with phrase lengths, modes, and unusual chromatic harmonies.
