Duration ca. 7:30

PROGRAM NOTES

The material for In Search of a Bird originally served as the middle movement of a chamber work composed for the New Orleans New Music Ensemble (NONME) in 2009. The rest of the work was eventually jettisoned, but I remained very drawn to the lyricism and occasional pathos of this music. When given the opportunity to compose a work for chamber orchestra for the 2011 Atlantic Music Festival, I was glad to be able to return to it, creating a version that included horn and a full string section. The title comes from Franz Kafka’s famous remark, “I am a cage, in search of a bird” - words that seem to capture something about the essence of this yearning, occasionally melancholy work.

Composed for the 2011 Atlantic Music Festival. Premiered by the 2011 AMF Orchestra at Colby College Chapel, Waterville, ME (July 2011).
