MAYA (2019)

For Wind Quintet

Duration ca. 13:00

PROGRAM NOTES

In two movements:

  1. [dream]

  2. [intoxication]

Māyā is a word common in Indian religion and philosophy. It has several potential definitions:

Māyā (n) - / ˈmɑ yɑ, -yə /

1. the power, as of a god, to produce illusions.

2. the production of an illusion.

3. the illusion of the reality of sensory experience and the experienced attributes of oneself.

This composition for wind quintet strives to capture something of the unreality of these definitions - firstly, in the context of a solemn ceremony of some kind, and secondly, in a frenzied dance.

Premiered by the University of Central Florida faculty wind quintet at the UCF Rehearsal Hall, Orlando, FL (September 2019)
