PROGRAM NOTES

and the world was still there was commissioned by NOW Ensemble as part of their 20th anniversary season in 2025-26. The piece was inspired by the sight of early morning light streaming through a bedroom window - an image that is simple and everyday, but also elegant and miraculous in its own way. The text (performed either by a signing flautist or optional soprano) is as follows:

back i came

back from the land of dreams

returned from a place of tumult and turmoil to find

my own bed, my own walls and recesses, the peaty softness

of my own pillow against my cheek.

from the blushing window, a cardinal’s piercing pipe.

i looked

and the world was still

there.
