HE Who Gets Slapped is the title of an ongoing opera-in-development with librettist Daniel Neer. The complete piece, in two acts, has a running time of three hours. But these brief excerpts - some for orchestra alone and others featuring vocalists - are intended to introduce listeners to important musical and dramatic ideas from the opera in a concert setting. Over the course of nine short movements, listeners will meet colorful characters from the world of the opera, including the trick rider Consuelo, the drunken clown Jackson, and the mysterious stranger HE. The given ordering of the movements is my preference. However, the piece may be excerpted or reordered if necessary for practical reasons.

Premiered by Opera Orlando with the UCF Symphony Orchestra (Eric Jacobsen, conductor) in Steinmetz Hall at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, Orlando FL (April 2023).
