PROGRAM NOTES
The pre-Socratic Greek philosopher Democritus (c. 460-370 B.C.E.) was the first person to develop a coherent atomic theory. In hindsight, his thinking was remarkably prescient; he believed atoms to be omnipresent, indivisible, and separated from one another by empty space. As we now know, atoms are themselves composed of smaller particles. However, I have always been intrigued by Democritus’ farsighted theories, created without any of the technology that contemporary thinkers enjoy.
Atoms, a short duo for electric guitar and drum kit, plays with this atomic imagery. The entire piece is generated by three contrasting “atomic” motives, which are combined and synthesized in different ways throughout.
Atoms was commissioned by percussionist Chris Graham and Guitarist Jay Sorce and premiered in Brooklyn, NY (Fall 2020).
