From 2007-10, I worked as the music director for St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church in Metairie, LA. During my tenure there, I was fortunate to work with organist Phil Harmelink. As it happened, the 30th anniversary of Phil’s service to the church fell in 2019, and I was asked to compose a new piece for the celebration. Taking into account two of Phil’s musical passions - fugues and spirituals - I wrote this piece, which synthesizes these elements in what I hope is a novel and engaging way.
