Haiku attempt to convey something expressive with a minimum of means, depicting imagery from nature - often imagery conveying the changing of the seasons - with extreme concision. The very best haiku hint at great philosophical depth underlying the literal meaning of the few words that make them up. Four Haiku, a setting of translated texts by Natsume Sōseki, Aida Bunnosuke, and Yosa Buson, strives to capture this implicit depth in music. Intended to be performed in a small, resonant space, it is a work full of subtle and intimate sounds.
Commissioned by the Central Florida Composers Forum. Premiered by Anna Eschbach, Galen Kaup, and Troy Gifford at the Maitland Art & History Museums, Maitland, FL (January 2025).
