PROGRAM NOTES
I S L A N D I is concerned with the relationship between societal systems and the individual. The systems with which we interact every day are, in one sense comforting. It's nice to know that your bus will come every morning, and that the money you put in the bank last week will still be there next week. In another sense, however, these systems are crushing and dehumanizing. Individuals are increasingly known by numbers assigned to them by such systems, and even traded as commodities among advertisers. Perhaps most disquieting of all, certain of these systems (especially economic and financial systems) are so large and complex that they exceed the understanding of any one person – the system runs itself, and its consequences are meted out dispassionately and without any recourse.
I S L A N D I explores these relationships, and wonders how – or if – an individual might wish to assert their individuality within such societal rigidity.
