PROGRAM NOTES
Perforation is an exploration of grief, presented in a deliberately stripped-down, bare sonic environment. The score is prefaced by these lines from Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz’s poem Rabbit Hole (2018):
Holding your mother’s hand
while she is dying is like trying to love
the very thing that will kill you.
Perforation responds to the raw, direct emotionality of these words by using the most immediate tools at a composer’s disposal: pulse, repetition, and (most of all) silence.
