PROGRAM NOTES
The story of Cupid and Psyche is a famous one. It has been told and re-told in every medium for thousands of years; yet its powerful themes of love, fear, trust and mistrust have kept it fresh even to the present day. Psyché attempts to understand the mindset and motivations of its title character in the tale, attempting to capture both her circumstances and psychological state in the moments, days, or years after her betrayal of Cupid’s trust. The piece is based on Moliére’s 1671 French setting of the tale more than any other — however, the work refrains from quoting Lully’s famous setting of this text.
Commissioned by Joseph Hebert. Premiered by the Loyola University New Orleans Wind Ensemble, April 2009.
