PWr was composed for a commissioning initiative created in response to the 2021 senate runoff election in the state of Georgia. The dedicatees of each of these short pieces made contributions to support democratic candidates in that runoff, and received these miniatures (along with miniatures by other participating composers) in return. The pieces are consequently quite individual, each tailored to their own performer. However, taken as a set, they are concerned with the idea of power – who has it, and why and what (if anything) an individual can do when government power is wielded irresponsibly. Additionally, the pieces are an examination of the instrument's timbral possibilities, focused especially on the full, resonant sound of its open strings.
