PROGRAM NOTES
In three movements:
Joie de Vivre
Urn Burial
Sky
Sky is a setting of three poems selected from a larger set by New York-based poet and author Nathan Kernan. Kernan’s poetry, by turns wistful, dreamy, jovial and melancholy, is inspired by the life and death of his friend and mentor James Schuyler. The final movement, “Sky,” is a particularly poignant look at Schuyler’s final hours, and features a textual (and musical) quotation of Fauré’s setting of Paul Verlaine’s Prison.
Commissioned by Mirror Visions Ensemble. Premiered by Mirror Visions Ensemble at Merkin Hall, New York, NY (May 2023).
