PROGRAM NOTES
Sonata/Sonare is the first of two authentic instrument commissions for the Aston Magna Music Festival that I fulfilled between 2016 and 2018. Tasked with writing for trio sonata instrumentation, I chose to base the piece on the meanings and connotations of the word “sonata” itself. In its most basic sense, “sonata” simply refers to an instrumental composition (from sonare, “to sound”). However, music history has imbued the term with a variety of other formal, textural, and orchestrational implications. Sonata/Sonare considers all these implications in turn, often using language drawn from another common instrumental grouping - the rock band.
