The Birth of Dangun
The Birth of Dangun is a ballet, originally composed for the New York-based Noree Performing Arts. The piece is based on Korean mythology regarding the birth of Dangun, God-king of the first Korean kingdom.
According to the story, Hwanung (환웅) was walking the Earth when he happened to be approached by a tiger and a bear, both of whom wished to become human. Hwanung subjected the creatures to a test: they must stay in a dark cave for 100 days, eating nothing but bitter herbs. The tiger failed the test; however, the bear persevered and was consequently transformed into a beautiful woman - who would eventually become Dangun’s mother.
The Birth of Dangun divides the action into five movements in three large sections. It can be performed staged, or as a concert piece.
Commissioned by Noree Performing Arts. Premiered at the Ailey Citigroup Theater, New York, NY (May 2018).
