PROGRAM NOTES
The F Word was composed during a somewhat fallow compositional period, when I was struggling to create and develop musical ideas. The piece itself, then, is a sonic manifestation of artistic frustration - something which is particularly evident in the work’s extended coda. The F Word is best realized alongside an MC, who is guided in the creation of their verse by a word cloud that appears at the beginning of the score. The words - “flawed,” “failure,” “foolish,” etc. - are meant to give prospective MCs insight into the piece’s meaning, and hint to listers that the F word in question may not be the one they were imagining.
