A NEW CONSORTIUM
Burtzos - D[RAM]EDY (2023), Concerto for Piano and Wind Ensemble
In partnership with Jenny Lin, piano and Scott Lubaroff, Conductor
ABOUT THE WORK
D[RAM]EDY is a two-movement concerto for piano and wind ensemble, commissioned by a consortium of wind ensembles and scheduled to premiere in early 2025. I’m thrilled that this project has come to fruition, and grateful to my colleague Scott Lubaroff for spearheading the consortium that made its creation possible. It’s a privilege to know that the incredible Jenny Lin will be performing the solo part at the piece’s premiere.
D[RAM]EDY is a piece about how experience evolves in the remembering. What was once a happy experience with a loved one may become bittersweet when one reflects on it after that person’s passing. Similarly, a miserable day may become an enjoyable story when one recounts it to friends. Nothing is every completely happy, or completely sad - rather, context always colors the way we recall our own lives. Alternately atmospheric and driving, the work explores these contrasts in a way that is vibrant and unapologetically emotional.
It is still possible to join this consortium. If you are an ensemble director who would like to bring D[RAM]EDY to life in 2025, see below for instructions.
